New York, September 28, 2026 — American Express announced Monday that its cards can now be used at more than 190 million merchant locations worldwide, as the company continues to expand its international presence.
The company said merchant acceptance outside the United States has more than doubled over the past four years. American Express has focused particularly on markets where its cardholders spend heavily, including major travel destinations such as Barcelona, Hong Kong, Paris and Sicily.
The expansion is part of American Express’ strategy to increase international spending and narrow the acceptance gap with larger global payment networks.
The company is also targeting the continued growth of international travel and consumer spending as it expands its network across different markets.
