Americans Mark 25 Years Since 9/11 Attacks Amid Remembrance and Reflection

Americans across the country are marking the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, honoring the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives and reflecting on the lasting impact of one of the darkest days in U.S. history.

Memorial ceremonies are being held in New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania. At the 9/11 Memorial in New York City, victims’ names are being read aloud as families, survivors and officials gather to remember those who were killed.

The attacks began when hijacked commercial airplanes were used to strike the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon near Washington. A fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, crashed in Pennsylvania after passengers and crew members attempted to regain control of the aircraft.

Twenty-five years later, the events of September 11 continue to shape American society, national security and foreign policy. For many families, however, the anniversary remains deeply personal as they continue to remember loved ones who never returned home.

The 25th anniversary is also a moment to reflect on the courage of first responders, passengers, survivors and ordinary citizens who helped others during the tragedy.

Across the United States, communities are observing the anniversary with moments of silence, memorial services and other events dedicated to remembering the victims and honoring their legacy.
