Johannesburg/Cape Town, September 28, 2026 — South African police are investigating two separate shootings that killed 27 people within hours of each other, according to Reuters.

Seventeen people were killed in one incident near Johannesburg, while another shooting in the Western Cape left 10 people dead. Police were searching for the suspects as investigations into the motives continued.

Initial findings suggested that one of the shootings may have been linked to a dispute involving illegal mining, while the other may have been connected to a business rivalry.

The incidents come only days after another shooting near Durban killed 11 people, adding to concerns over gun violence in South Africa.

President Cyril Ramaphosa said the situation could not continue and called for action to address the country’s violence.
